Katie Houff Life as a dancer (and avid traveler!)

It's been a while! In short, interning at the American Dance Festival last summer was AMAZING and I am in the works to do that same internship again this coming summer. FABULOUS festival where I got to dance every morning, develop (and DEFINITELY expand upon) my knowledge in technical theatre and production, network with dancers and other interns, and produce shows for some amazing artists. Eagerly awaiting the 2011 summer season companies to be announced!!

After my work…

Katie Houff Road trippin'

This is going to be a quickie post because I need to get to bed! I'm waking up early tomorrow to hit the road for Durham, NC for the American Dance Festival!!! I have a production internship there for the summer. I've been pretty nervous about it for a while but just recently those nerves have morphed into excitement. I can't wait to meet my 2 roommates and the other interns, delve into the technical world, and meet and watch famous dance companies from all over the world perform. I'm…

Katie Houff These streets will make you feel brand new...

Well, this is it. The home stretch to graduation. Just 4 weeks left and I'll be spit out into the real world. I'm terrified, I'm excited, I'm clueless, I'm prepared but I'm not ready, I don't want to leave but I'm in that eminent place. Just have to keep an open mind and brace myself for impact. Good grief, melodramatic much?...

This past weekend was the Virginia Repertory Dance Company's last stop on our 5-week tour and my last road trip with the girls. :( Extremely…

Katie Houff VRDC on tour! ADF! Future??

Spring semester at JMU always flies by and is jam packed with dancing! This past weekend the VRDC began their 5-week tour by performing in the Z Mullins Dance Company Symposium and Concert on Saturday at St. Catherine's School in Richmond, VA. This concert brought together ZMDC, VRDC, UVA's dance minor program, VCU's resident professional company Amaranth, and Radford's resident professional company danah bellah DanceWorks. It was a wonderfully diverse concert and it was great to see lots of…

Katie Houff Life in dance update...it's been a while!

Last time I wrote, I believe I had just finished Adriane Fang's residency/the VRDC concert in December. Christmas break was fab (lots of eating and laziness), and the beginning of my final semester started off with a BANG! I auditioned for and was chosen to be in a trio choreographed by Faye Driscoll for the Contemporary Dance Ensemble concert in March. It's an excerpt from her evening-length work 'Wow Mom, Wow' and feels so good to perform. It's extremely physical with probably half the…

Katie Houff Last rep residency with Adriane Fang

The Virginia Repertory Dance Company concert is only a few weeks away and 4 of us had our last residency for the concert last week. Adriane Fang of Washington, DC and previous principal dancer for Doug Varone, came to JMU to set a piece on some of us. It's a really awesome piece!

The title is Repeating Patterns of Contention: 2nd Edition, which is a pretty fierce and totally appropriate title for the work. The beginning utilizes sound of a library recording discussing the procedures… Continue

Nick Lazzarini It's Been a Long Time I Know...

What's up everyone? Sorry it's been so long since I've written in my blog. I've been crazy. I'll start off with the best news I have... MY FOOT IS HEALED WOOHOOO!!!!! I've been dancing again and let me tell you sister friend it feels GOOD. Not dancing for the last couple of months has made me stop and think about what the heck I'm doing with my life. Let's be honest I need to be onstage. I can't teach anymore. It's sucking the life out of me. Don't get me wrong, I really like teaching (not to… Continue

Katie Houff VelocityDC = awesome!

Oh. my. gosh. Saturday was the coolest day I've had in a long time! I headed up to Washington, D.C. for the day with about 30 other JMU dance majors to see Saturday evening's performance during the VelocityDC Dance Festival. This festival brought together some of the big DC-based companies and fit them together into one weekend of dance. The performance that we saw featured Gesel Mason, EDGEWORKS Dance Theatre, Edwin Aparicio flamenco, CityDance Ensemble, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Ron K. Brown… Continue

Katie Houff EDE amazingness!!!

This past week was a complete whirlwind of inspiring dance! As I mentioned in my previous post, this past week was the week that the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble came to JMU to set Laurie Eisenhower's piece, Stop, on the Virginia Repertory Dance Company. Laurie didn't actually arrive until Friday night so two of her dancers, Mary and Alicia, came down to teach us the majority of the piece from Wednesday-Friday.

As you can probably tell by the way I'm wording this, I got in!! We… Continue

Katie Houff Daniel and Laurie

Daniel Burkholder's residency is complete! Well, it actually finished up on Sunday but I haven't had a chance to blog since then. =P

I really enjoy dancing the piece he set on us. He didn't mention its title to us so maybe he's working on developing an appropriate one. Like I said in my previous post, it deals with the concept of home. The close-to-15-minute long piece is a journey of being home, choosing to leave home, and arriving somewhere else to create your new home. We use a… Continue

Katie Houff New Dance Festival and first residency of the year!!

Hello all!

School started last week and we jumped RIGHT in. This weekend is the first concert of the year, The New Dance Festival. Every fall the JMU dance faculty presents new work and brings in a guest artist and their company to perform as well.

This year we brought in DC-based Daniel Burkholder/The Playground to present their ever-evolving work, "My Ocean is Never Blue". It explores how we relate to water; how it's in our bodies, where it is in abundance and where it is… Continue

Ricky Marcelino Palomino Prodigy Dance Centre Off To A Great Start!!!

Yet I again I must share my love for teaching. I had the pleasure of working with Prodigy Dance Centre in Plano, Texas this past week and yet again, the kids were sensational! It was a condensed staff of Ricky Palomino ME (SYTYCD, WCDE), Kim Mcswain (JUMP, N'SYNC), and the studio staff. I will admit. I think every young dancer is SENSATIONAL. They are young masters of time, space, body, spirit, and emotion. But i gotta say. Me and my love for teaching and training dancers really produces… Continue

Alli Layering of Pop Culture

I know I’m bias when I say this but when I think: fashion, dance, pop culture, together, the first thing that comes to my mind is NFL/NBA cheerleaders. From the outside you may think that I’m crazy or too main stream but the truth of the matter is that most NFL/NBA cheerleaders hit the mark in all these areas and are not cheerleaders by trade but rather most are classically trained dancers.

The Laker Girls are a classic example of fashion, dance and pop culture. Many dancers use the… Continue
