Pop culture is part of our heritage. We aim to bring fashion, dance, and pop culture together as a lifestyle.
Last time I wrote, I believe I had just finished Adriane Fang's residency/the VRDC concert in December. Christmas break was fab (lots of eating and laziness), and the beginning of my final semester started off with a BANG! I auditioned for and was chosen to be in a trio choreographed by Faye Driscoll for the Contemporary Dance Ensemble concert in March. It's an excerpt from her evening-length work 'Wow Mom, Wow' and feels so good to perform. It's extremely physical with probably half the piece relying on some kind of weight share or lift. Everything flows into the next with no awkward transitions, the music fills me from the inside out, I love this piece. Each of us has a specific character and the piece explores our relationship as sisters/best friends/lovers and how it evolves, how we deal with our everyday life interactions and deal with the choices we make. Can't wait to perform this piece at the end of March!!
Adriane Fang returned a couple weekends ago to rework her piece, "Resolving Patterns of Contention; 2nd Edition". She wasn't pleased with how the piece turned out on our mainstage since she mostly choreographs for studio space performances. The same music is used but she reworked most of the transitions and some of the movement phrases to make the changes in mood blend together more successfully. As much as I was not excited about the mini-residency, especially since we're only performing this piece 2 more times EVER, I really like the changes she made and I feel more in the piece when I'm dancing it. This is one piece we'll be performing at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX) the first weekend of April. :)
This weekend is our Senior Dance Concert! All the seniors have collaborated to make a performance of solos, duets, and trios with a final senior improv for everyone. I've been designing lights for it which has been fun as always and fulfilling my other Student Technical Director responsibilities. Since it's a short, fun concert it hasn't been as much of a hassle as some of the more complicated studio shows and I've had fun preparing for it. Dress rehearsal's tonight with performances Friday and Saturday here at JMU!
I've also been working on my application for a summer internship in production at the American Dance Festival. All I have left to collect is one more letter of recommendation and then it'll be in the mail! We hear back in mid-March so I'll let you know if I get the job!!
That's all for now...happy dancing!!
